Bill Emmott is a distinguished British journalist, author, and international affairs consultant with exceptional expertise in global economics, geopolitics, and Asian affairs.
He served as Editor-in-Chief of The Economist for 13 years (1993-2006), during which time the publication's worldwide circulation more than doubled, reinforcing its status as a leading authority on global current affairs.
He is Chairman of the Trustees of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a Trustee of the Chester Beatty Museum in Dublin, an Ushioda Fellow of Tokyo College, University of Tokyo, Chair of Global Disinformation Index, a media fellow at the Institute for European Policymaking at Bocconi university in Milan and is a Member of the Comitato Scientifico of the Centro Einaudi in Turin. He is also Senior Advisor, Geopolitics for Montrose Associates, the London-based strategic intelligence consultancy.

Previously, Emmott served on Swiss Re's Senior Advisory Panel from 2006-19; on All Nippon Airways' UK Advisory Board from 2009-17; on Critical Resource's Senior Advisory Panel from 2008-23; was a board director of E-Access, a Japanese mobile phone firm in 2009-10; was a board director of Development Consultants International, an Irish-UK firm, from 2006-10; chaired the London Library from 2009-15; and chaired the Japan Society of the UK from 2019-2024.
In 2016, the Japanese Government awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for services to UK-Japan relations. Emmott has received multiple journalism awards, including Italy's prestigious "È giornalismo" award (the first foreigner to receive it), and the Gerald Loeb "lifetime achievement" award.
His academic credentials include honorary degrees from Warwick, City, and Northwestern Universities, and he is an honorary fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, where he originally studied politics, philosophy, and economics.
A prolific writer, Emmott has authored 14 books - many on Japan, Asia, and the West's political evolution. Notable works include The Fate of the West, Rivals: How the Power Struggle between China, India and Japan will Shape our Next Decade, and Japan's Far More Female Future, which explores gender equality and workplace reform in Japan. His most recent book, Deterrence, Diplomacy and the Risk of Conflict over Taiwan (2024), demonstrates his continued engagement with pressing geopolitical issues.
His columns appear regularly in La Stampa, Nikkei Business, Mainichi Shimbun, and Project Syndicate, and he has contributed to documentaries on Italy and the European Union.
